Go-go gadget watch…! It's a nifty technology that. A watch that can, among other things, count how many steps you take in a day during your normal routine. But what I am talking about in this post is setting aside a half hour, or hour, of your day just for the SOUL purpose of walking…for exercise. Yes you read that correctly.
Perhaps the original form of cardio, walking puts a steady state load on your body in an aerobic fashion. Aerobic, by following its strict definition, means with oxygen. When your body undergoes such a steady state workload, the oxygen you take in will be used to help breakdown your bodies source of fuel for the task. The terms cardiovascular and aerobic are interchangeable. Derived by the fact that said elevated heart rate will facilitate the delivery of all that oxygen you're taking in…to your muscles.
I am not a walker myself. As in for exercise. Rather, sports are my thing. But, I for some reason remember walking during the pandemic. Ah, now I am remembering. So I am a partaker in the night life per-say. And during the pandemic the night life was shut down, which was no es bueno para mi. (ok, I am going to translate that last bit as if I am from the UK.) That's the Spanish for: not good for me. So, as my Friday nights were squashed from mandatory lockdowns, I found myself going on walks.
And not just any type of walks, ones with a soundtrack. I simply chose a beautiful part of town to walk through, and paired it with a beautiful piece of music. What an otherworldly experience.
It's not as if I was totally foreign to walking larger distances. Thus far in my professional life I have spent a cumulated age walking from far distant parking lots to the main parts of college campuses I was either a student at, or instructor. But this was normal, and my mind would be rather occupied with work related stuff during those times. Actually, many times my mind was completely blank to be honest. Don't know what that says of me, actually.
The covi-wovi walk sessions were quite different. Lasting just a half hour, I found myself becoming mildly winded towards the end with a noticeable yet ever so slight amount of soreness. My body was not used to such brisk walks. The muscles used to keep my torso upright in the same position for such a long time became a bit fatigued. So did my shoulders, for the same reason. My arms, naturally used as counterweights to my legs, also showed a dash of soreness.
It was honestly pretty cool.
Through the duration of this newsletter, you will be reading a lot about resistance training and sporting activities. But do not discount the power of a good brisk walk. In fact, if sports are not your fancy. And a treadmill session feels like a soulless experience, I would say walking is for you. If so, try three half hour sessions a week.
If you are a gadget watch person, note how many steps you take on a normal day without a walk. Then do the same with a walk. How many more steps did you take…? What is the percentage increase…? If you have trouble with this calculation let me know in the comments and I will calculate it for you. I think the results will surprise you.
